Car and ferry journey to Port Ellen on Islay following by a walk to Ardbeg and back to Port Ellen for an evening's stay
Hazards and warnings
rough seas! May affect which port the ferries can dock in on Islay
After a very comfortable stay at Dunivaig (www.dunivaig.co.uk) and a hearty Scottish breakfast we left Tarbert for a short car ride to Kennacraig. Ample free car parking facilties where we said goodbye to the car for a few days and purchased 5 day return ferry tickets from the Calmac office at the ferry terminal.
Had an enjoyable 2 hour crossing docking into Port Ellen. Accommodation was sort at the local hostelry and then we set out for Ardbeg on foot.
Found the locals very friendly - particularly one chap who took pity on us (in the pouring rain) and gave us a lift to the distillery! There were no tours on offer but we were given a tasting session.
On the way back we hope to call in at Lagavulin and Laphroaig but these were both closed for the season.
